Dan Gable’s records as an athlete and a coach speak for themselves. No other human being in the history of sport has been so dominant in both arenas.

As an athlete Gable was a three-time state champion, two time NCAA champion at Iowa State, Pan American games champion and World champion. His career as an athelte culminated in the 1972 Olympic games in Munich Germany where he won the Gold medal, and in his 6 Olympic matches did not surrender a single point to any of his opponents. The Soviets came to the Olympics with only one goal in mind: to defeat Gable. They were unsuccessful.

This represents a feat so incredible it has been compared to a batter in the World Series hitting six home runs in a row, or a bowler rolling six 300 games in a row.

As a coach Gable was even more dominant. As Iowa’s all-time winningest coach, he led his Iowa Hawkeyes to become Big 10 conference champions all 21 years he coached, plus earning NCAA titles in 15 of his 21 seasons. Gable coached team’s averaged 17 wins and just one loss per season. He had 7 perfect seasons in 21 years of coaching, an unheard of feat. In his final season, Iowa shattered its own NCAA team points record scoring 170 points. He is a 3 time Olympic coach, 6 time World Team coach and 10 time World Cup coach.

Gable’s success as an athlete and as a coach is a direct result of his dedication, work ethic, and the ability to get the very most out of himself and others. His drive to achieve peak performance and repeat performance from himself and those under his coaching allows him to occupy a plateau that few have ever achieved.

Retired from active coaching, Gable is involved in advancing the sport of wrestling around the world. As a highly sought after public speaker, he inspires groups of all levels on the topics of performance enhancement, team building, motivation and overcoming adversity. His mental toughness and ability to figure out how to win are unparalleled.

Gable resides in Iowa City with his wife of 41 years, Kathy. They have four daughters Jenni, Annie, Molly and Mackenzie, along with eleven grandchildren, Gable, Danny, Jake, Elsie, Eliza, Betsy, Mickey, Louie, Archie, Sammy and Kate.
